Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) is a critically acclaimed movie about the lives of fictional folksingers set in Greenwich Village in the early 1960s. Interestingly enough, there is a fascinating history about how the electrification of guitars changed the global music scene forever—that will be the subject of a different blog post. The movie stars Oscar Issac (Llewyn Davis), his love interest Jean (Carey Mulligan), and Justin Timberlake (Jim, another folksinger) in this classic Coen Brothers comedy drama.

In one scene, Jean and Llewyn are arguing in a café, when they issue this exchange:

Jean: “Do you ever think about the future at all?”
Llewyn: “The future? You mean like flying cars?”

It is amazing to me how often “flying cars” are considered icons of a technologically optimistic futuristic energy scenario.
